I've noticed in online fandom that there are some people who seem irresistibly drawn to the most complicated possible explanation, and perhaps Baring-Gould was one of them.
However, Watson refers to the "Sign of Four" by name in "A Case of Identity," which Baring-Gould's chronology puts significantly earlier than The Sign of Four itself. Even a dedicated fanwanker would have trouble squaring that circle.
