Bobby Riggs is an OTT caricature of a male chauvinist - I mean, in real life he was like that; the movie is not caricaturing him, he caricatured himself to draw attention/prize money to this tennis game. Without a more subtle male chauvinist to provide contrast, it'd probably be pretty easy for people to look at his character and think "Well, I'm not like THAT" and relax into the happy delusion that they're not seixst at all.
